2022.08.03 Level Forecast

Aug 03, 2022 03:14 pm

The current level of Lake of the Woods is 323.99 m (1062.9 ft), over 95th percentile level for this time of year. The average lake level declined by 6 cm (2 in) over the past week. The lake level is above the 2014 peak of 323.78 m (1062.29 ft) and is below the record peak since regulation began of 324.31 m (1064.0 ft), set in July of 1950. The dams in Kenora remain fully open. Over the next week the lake level is expected to decline by 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 in).

Upstream, the level of Rainy Lake entered its Rule Curves on August 3d. The first outflow reduction from Rainy Lake occurred on August 2nd and another reduction is scheduled for later this week. These flow reductions will have a direct effect on the level of Lake of the Woods, increasing its rate of decline.

With decreasing inflows to Lake of the Woods, the outflow from the lake will also gradually drop. Levels along the Winnipeg River will see moderate decreases of up to 9 cm (4 in) directly below the Norman Dam and 6 cm (2 in) at Minaki.

The current level of Lac Seul is 356.72 m (1170.3 ft), 90th percentile level for this time of year. The level of the main body of Lac Seul changed little over the past week and is expected to decline by up to 4 cm (1.5 in) over the next week depending on rainfall. Lac Seul authorized outflow is scheduled to increase to 450 m³/s on Friday, August 5th.

Harbor permit update 8.1.2022

Harbor permit update 8.1.2022

Contacted Brent today.  Brent is with the MN DNR, Bemidji office whom we have been working with from Day 1 with our Harbor Application.  We did receive the news that the Red Lake Tribal Leader has “verbally” accepted and approved the Archeology report he received and that he will be signing off on this part of our harbor application requirement.

This week Brent will be talking with his supervisor who do the final review of our Harbor Application and hoping for his signature of approval.

Brent, Dale and I will be in contact on Monday, August 8th and we will get another status update, hoping to hear that all signatures have been obtained and we can move onto the actual permit.

We will still need to receive a letter of approval or possibly additional steps with the Core of Engineer’s.  Brent is keeping us up to date with his correspondence with the Core but ultimately, we will is a separate entity with this project.

None the less we certainly feel we made good progress/good news yesterday.  I keep saying “we still aren’t out of the woods” on all my news with the Harbor, the high water, the construction.

We will find our way through the woods,

don’t you worry!!!

Dale and Connie

Lake of the Woods Secretariat Notice Board Updates for 08/01/2022

We, Dale’s On Lake of the Woods, receives the Notice Boards update weekly.

This came to us via: secretariat@lwcb.ca on 8.1.22

We are very happy to see a drop in the lake level of approximately 3 inches.  We are not in a safe zone as of yet.  We need a significant drop in lake level to remove our berm protection and create our long-term protection from this ever happening to our lakeshore property in the future.

Again, we cannot thank each and every individual that came to us through hands-on, gifts of many kinds, and endless prayers.  I know I will forget someone or some act of kindness- forgive me it has been a whirlwind of events keeping our lakeshore property protected.  As we stated, we are not out of the woods yet.  The pumps still run every day, the waves still splash over the berm depending on the wind speed and direction but not as damaging due to the preventive work that has been done to protect us.

A little worried about tomorrow with the wind speed prediction.  We will keep praying, thank you.

Dale and Conni

Pumping water 7.26.22

Pumping water after a couple of shots of rain today!! The Lake water level is at 1063.2.  The Lake level has gone down 1 inch according to the July 25th Lake of the Woods Notice Board report.  We did have a significant rainfall last week and Dale has 2 to 3 pumps running every day to keep the water levels on the inside of the berm down.  We pump out the borrow pit by the lakeshore which is filling up and the water after each bout of rain and the filling up of our ditches and our road to the Lakeside campground.  The water has nowhere to go.  This pumping will need to continue until we feel we can remove the berm or move the berm on the outside of the 7 flooded campsites and that will not take place until the lake water recedes out of the resort.  Looking like August maybe into Sept.

Despite still the loss of 7 campsites, we have got our camping going on.  We have openings for camping most weekdays as well as some weekends.  We would love to have you come to camp with us.

I know it is really different this year and we want to be upfront and honest.  Our guests are not able to use our boat ramp, however, we have made arrangements to dock boats at our neighboring resort.  We have lost our swimming area but we do have an open area for swimming at the end of our beach area to the East.  We hope to bring more sand this coming week to enhance this area for swimming.

Both Pergolas have been destroyed in the Sunday storm that came through a little over a week ago.  We, however, do still have our beach bar area down lakeside with a firepit.  The sunsets are beautiful and the visiting with a beverage and the crackling fire is the best.  We have great campsites that have a picnic table, fire pit with free firewood, and a hammock for all but one campsite due to there no longer a tree to swing from, so sad.

Click on the link below and catch Dale pumping after the pump has broken 3 times.  This guy we thought bought a lemon but he has had help from the seller and done some amazing repairs on his own and here we are pumping water again!!  What a guy, my Dale.

Fishing Report 7.20.22

WE HAVE NIGHTCRAWLERS HERE AT DALE’S ON LAKE OF THE WOODS

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lake of the Woods Tourism Bureau weekly fishing report!!
Fishing Report
7.20.2022
On the south end…  Summer walleye fishing remains very good across Lake of the Woods.  Different schools of walleyes keying in on different forage offers anglers numerous opportunities.
Water levels are starting to drop and debris that is consistent with high water has flushed through the system.  Thankfully, fishing has been great despite a high water year.
A good bite for eater walleyes in 10-15 feet just off of Pine Island and other areas along the south shore.  Some are using spinners with crawlers to catch these fish but trolling crankbaits to cover water is also producing.  Some are still jigging which is still effective despite it being mid July.
Deep mud in 28 – 33′ this time of year holding good numbers of fish.  You just have to find what general area they are living in, get your baits in front of them and normally good things happen.
Others are leaning on more traditional techniques of spinners with a crawler or trolling crankbaits to catch their fish, which can be especially effective when fish are spread out.
Some of the reefs in Big Traverse Bay are holding nice numbers of walleyes.  Bobber fishing or jigging the top of the reefs or pulling spinners on the reef or on the transition where the rock meets the mud producing good fish.
In addition to walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch pike, smallmouth bass and even an occasional muskie, crappie or sturgeon are being caught on the basin.
On the Rainy River…   Some good summer fishing continues on the Rainy River this summer.  Areas out of the current have been the go to spots this year.
A nice mixed bag in the river includes walleyes, saugers, smallmouth bass, and pike.  Good numbers of shiners in the river.
Sturgeon anglers showing off some big fish being caught.  Anglers can catch and release fish or keep one sturgeon through the summer if a sturgeon tag is purchased.
Big pike are still prowling backwater bays and feeder rivers.  Smallies are living around rocks, current breaks, bays and bridges.
Up at the NW Angle…  Fishing on both sides of the border has been excellent.  Jigging and pulling spinners are the two techniques most anglers are using to catch their walleyes.
As water temps warm, some fish utilizing structure (underwater points, sunken islands, etc.) while some fish are gravitating to mud flats.  Jig where tighter concentrations of fish, pull spinners when fish are more spread out.
Muskie anglers catching and releasing good number with some 50 inch plus fish in the mix.
Various ways to travel to the Angle.
  1. Drive through Canada to the Angle  (must be vaccinated, no covid test required)
  2. LOW Passenger Service (charter boat service across the lake avoiding customs)
  3. Lake Country Air.(fly from various Midwest locations to LOW and NW Angle)
4.  Take your own boat.  (Safety first, this is a 40 mile ride over big water)
