High water/flooding clean up progress 8.28.22

This summer we were unable to use CS#’s 2,3,4,14,15, and 16. Over the last week/week 1/2 Dale has been slowing bringing down the berm and cleaning up from the flooding. This is Campsite #2.

Looking through the tree’s you see campsite 2 and 3. Berm has been removed but still some standing water and the aftereffects of the standing water in this area since Memorial holiday.

Summer Projects 2022

Our lovely granddaughter Lindi helping us with summer projects, we finished 2 and as you can see, we have many to go!  Lindi heads home today but we sure were so grateful for Lindi’s help. 

We are getting our Sleeper bathrooms and generator boxes all repaired and repainted!!

The 2 on the right Lindi and I completed and starting Monday I will keep going with the help of our dear Kala. This will be a big project done but everything will look like new, all repaired and painted with new lighting in each bathroom.

Aug 26, 2022 12:47 pmThe current level of Lake of the Woods is 323.62 m (1061.7 ft), over 95th percentile level for this time of year. The average lake level declined by 9 cm (3 in) over the past week. Lake of the Woods is expected to decline at a rate of 8 to 11 cm (3 to 4 in) per week. The dams in Kenora remain fully open.

The Winnipeg River between Kenora and Minaki is expected to gradually fall between 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) over the next week as the Lake of the Woods level falls.

The current level of Lac Seul is 356.55 m (1169.8 ft), a 70th percentile level for this time of year. The level of the main body of Lac Seul declined by 7 cm (2 in) over the past week and is expected to decline by 1 to 6 cm (1 to 2 in) over the next week. Lac Seul authorized outflow is 450 m³/s with no scheduled changes.

Aug 19, 2022 01:33 pmOver the past week, large amounts of precipitation fell over many areas of the basin. Weekly totals were well above average ranging from 40 to 75 mm for most areas. This rainfall has caused tributary flows to increase temporarily and lake levels to stabilize for a day or two. This brief but intense rainfall will not stop the drawdown of Lake of the Woods and Lac Seul and precipitation conditions are forecasted to return to the normal range over the next week.

The current level of Lake of the Woods is 323.72 m (1062.1 ft), over 95th percentile level for this time of year. The average lake level declined by 10 cm (3 in) over the past week. Lake of the Woods is expected to decline at a rate of 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 in) per week. The dams in Kenora remain fully open.

The Winnipeg River between Kenora and Minaki is expected to gradually fall between 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) over the next week as the Lake of the Woods level falls.

Small steps to Flooding/High water Clean-up

Dale and Larry are starting the cleanup from the high water/flooding that has had to be part of our daily routing since before the beginning of the Spring Season this year.  We also have the wonderful help of our beautiful 12-year-old Granddaughter helping us for a couple weeks.  This young girl was right there for Grandpa Dale moving rocks, pulling of the plastic and help Larry fold the plastic up.

Please note we are not in a safe zone yet, but we want to continue to stay on the cautious side until the water does recede to what would be considered a safe water level. Baby steps as they say!!

Parking lot berm cleanup!

This is the area between the lakeside berm and CS#5. Still water and we are still pumping water out quite a bit each week. Dale did open the culvert by CS#14 and CS#12A and then we received 2 days of rain which was given us another 3-4 inches.

Campsite #2, raked, leveled, grass seed planted! Unable to remove the berm as of today – baby steps!!! But at least we are able to use CS#2 again. Still have 6 campsites remaining in condition where we unable to have campers and may not be able to until next summer season.

Removed the West side berm by CS #14-#16 but the pumps remain as Dale will be opening the culvert here and with the 2 days of rain, we are ready to fire these pumps up.

Dale has a good start on repairing the road to campsites 14,15, and 16 and building the permanent berm to prevent future flooding. This berm will be built to a protecting level and seeded for a nice grass covered berm. Maybe some wildflowers seeds tossed in there. Hmmm!?

Dale and I would like to thank each and every wonderful person here with us this weekend. So blessed by each of you. We have all our campsites full through Sunday night. Thank you everyone. Last weekend we were blessed with almost full capacity and full this weekend and Labor Day weekend. Weekdays and upcoming weeks are really pretty wide open. Come do some late summer / Fall camping with us! We will be here for you.

Harbor Application Update 8/19/22

No further news.  I was told we would have an answer by last Friday. Made calls to DNR Monday and Wednesday with no call back to us.  Did not take the time to call today, lost track of time.  Will call again first thing Monday morning.  Hoping and praying for good results but the prayers will continue as we have to then go the next step and take all the paperwork to Lake of the Woods County soil and water department.

2022.08.17 Levels Forecast & Regulation Strategy

The average lake level declined by 12 cm (4 in) over the past week. Widespread precipitation fell over the past several days, with heaviest amounts over Lake of the Woods and the Big Fork and Little Fork river sub-basins. The recent steady drop in Lake of the Woods level stalled briefly due to this rain, but is expected to resume at a slightly slower rate of 5to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) per week. The dams in Kenora remain fully open.

The Winnipeg River between Kenora and Minaki is expected to gradually fall between 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) over the next week as the Lake of the Woods level falls.

The current level of Lac Seul is 356.62 m (1170.0 ft), an 80th percentile level for this time of year. The level of the main body of Lac Seul declined by 3 cm (1 in) over the past week and is expected to decline by 5 to 8 cm (2 to 3 in) over the next week. Lac Seul authorized outflow is 450 m³/s with no scheduled changes.

Throughout the spring, the Lake of the Woods Control Board has been operating on an emergency basis, with meetings every few days to review the latest basin conditions and forecasts in order to make regulation decisions and provide frequent updates on forecasts to the public. The Board has also been active in briefing First Nations, municipalities and provincial and federal ministries involved in the emergency response to flooding across the basin.

With the return to normal summer levels for Lac Seul and a continued drop of Lake of the Woods expected this month, the Board has resumed normal operations according to an adopted Regulation Strategy. On August 16, the Board held a Regulation Consultation call with invitations to Grand Council Treaty #3 and representatives of Specific Interest Groups and Resource Agencies. Participants received a briefing of current conditions and forecasts and an overview of a draft strategy to operate Lake of the Woods and Lac Seul dams through to the end of October under a range of possible flow conditions. Participants were then given the opportunity to provide feedback on the strategy. The adopted Regulation Strategy is available at http://lwcb.ca/noticeboard/regulation/.

A key focus of the strategy is maintaining maximum outflow from Lake of the Woods until the lake level returns to the legislated operating range, followed by a balanced drawdown of the lake and the Winnipeg River in order to reach normal water levels ahead of freeze-up.

What a blessed weekend

This has been a summer of blood sweat and tears!

This weekend we actually feel so good and none of the “icky” stuff with the high water and flooding-

Such a joy to hear laughter, watch games being played, art projects and most importantly family and friends just enjoying each other and relaxing like they deserve. Away from all the hustle and bustle that takes place each week.

Dale’s On the Lake of the Woods Resort bikes available for our Guests to enjoy while staying with us! Our Guests in CS#8 got a little bike riding in each day with us over the weekend.
